The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has asked President Joe Biden to immediately resign.
He made the call after Biden made public his decision to pull out of the US presidential race.
On Sunday, Biden announced his decision to drop out of the forthcoming presidential election amid intense pressure over his age and health.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” the US President said in a letter announcing his decision.
Prior to this, five House Democrats had on Friday charged the president to drop out of the 2024 election.

The lawmakers are Reps. Jared Huffman (California), Marc Veasey (Texas), Chuy Garcia (Illinois) and Marc Pocan (Wisconsin).
In a joint statement, they urged their Party’s presidential candidate to “pass the torch to a new generation of Democratic leaders.”
However, after Biden bowed to pressure and withdrew from the US Presidential race, Johnson in a press statement urged him to step down as the president.
According to him, if the president is not fit to contest the upcoming presidential election, then he should not continue as president.
The Speaker said, “If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough”
