US demands justice for Owolabi, Nigerian-American murdered in Nigeria

US demands just for Owolabi, killed by herdsmen when he visited his business

“The American government wanted evidence and they came down here to do a post-mortem. Another post-mortem was done in the US before the burial. The case was presented at the United Nations meeting which was just concluded.

“They have given the Nigerian government a time frame to get the perpetrators; the instruction was given to the DSS office, but up till now, no arrest has been made. They already have the facts that herdsmen were behind the killing.”

Washington has taken up with Abuja the case of a Nigerian-American who was murdered by herdsmen in Ogbomoso in August when he visited his hotel business in his native city.

Olugbenga Owolabi, an American citizen who lived in Maryland, United States, was abducted by gunmen along with a worker in the hotel, Rachael Opadele.

Both of them were killed by their abductors on 3 August 2022, eight months after the hotel was opened in December 2021.

Owolabi’s funeral was held on 1 October at the Trinity Life Church, Maryland, US.

US gives Abuja a time frame to find killers

Owolabi’s brother Ayorinde told The PUNCH the US government has given the Nigerian government a time frame to find his killers and bring them to justice.

“The American government wanted evidence and they came down here to do a post-mortem. Another post-mortem was done in the US before the burial. The case was presented at the United Nations meeting which was just concluded,” he said.

“They have given the Nigerian government a time frame to get the perpetrators; the instruction was given to the DSS office, but up till now, no arrest has been made. They already have the facts that herdsmen were behind the killing.

“The American government took his body from LAUTECH back to the US. A death certificate was obtained at the LAUTECH teaching hospital and also at the Delaware State Military Hospital, USA.”
