Manchester United seem to have lost one of their main targets, Benfica’s Darwin Nunez to their arch-rivals, Liverpool this summer.

According to the UK Metro, Uniteds’ new manager, Erik ten Hag was left furious at the development as he was “counting” on the club to bring the striker to Old Trafford.

But the 22-year-old Uruguayan has now decided to ditch Man United and join Merseyside club, Liverpool, in a deal worth £64million the report says.

Adding to the frustration of the Old Trafford faithful is the news that Nunez is set to have his medical within the next 24 hours before putting pen-to-paper in a deal that could rise to around £80m.

The prolific Uruguay forward netted a total of 36 goals last season in all competitions, including twice against The Reds in last year’s Champions League.

Nunez was high on Uniteds’ priority list and Ten Hag felt that he could provide understudy Cristiano Ronaldo next season, before becoming the club’s long-term first choice striker.

But the Dutch gaffer has been left disillusioned and furious as the Red Devils were caught cold by their Premier League rivals.

Erik ten Hag, who is yet to bring in any new player in this summer transfer, will now have to shift his focus to other targets as the 2022/2023 season beckons.
