Davey added: “A state visit from our King would be seen as yet another huge diplomatic coup for President Trump, so it should not be given to someone who repeatedly insults and damages our country.”

The United Kingdom’s Liberal Democrat leader, Sir Ed Davey, has said King Charles’s planned state visit to the United States next month should be cancelled by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, given President Donald Trump’s derogatory comments about Britain.

He gave the advice Sunday in a party statement reported by Sky News.

He was reacting to Trump’s recent remarks about Starmer, in which he referred to the UK as ‘our once-great ally’ and criticised the Prime Minister for being involved in conflicts post-victory.

According to Davey, Starmer should ‘advise the King to reconsider the state visit scheduled for April’, especially amid the ongoing conflict in Iran.

He added: ‘At a time when Trump has launched an illegal war that is devastating the Middle East and pushing up energy bills for British families, it is clear this visit should not go ahead.’

Davey further noted: ‘A state visit from our King would be seen as yet another huge diplomatic coup for President Trump, so it should not be given to someone who repeatedly insults and damages our country.’
