To cut down on spam, the micro-blogging site, Twitter has cut down the number of followers users can follow per day from 1,000 to 400.

The reason for the new limit is that it helps prevent spammers from rapidly growing their accounts by following then unfollowing accounts in a “bulk, aggressive or indiscriminate manner” which is a violation of Twitter Rules.

Several companies have been offering tools that allowed their customers to automatically follow a massive number of accounts with little efforts. These companies also offer tools to mass unfollow accounts which did not follow back.

Users responded to the new follow limit by asking why it has to be 400 which to them is a large number.

Yoel Roth Twitter’s Head of Site Integrity said the company looked at follow behaviour at various thresholds and chose 400 as a reasonable limit that stopped spam while not affecting legitimate users.
