Twitter begins rollout of edit button for users

Twitter has confirmed that it is testing a new feature that will allow its users to edit tweets

The social media company said in a blog post that the Edit Tweet feature is to “give people a short period of time to fix things like typos, add missed tags, and more.”

“With Edit Tweet, we’re hoping to make Tweeting easier and more approachable, giving people more choice and control in how they express themselves and how they contribute to the many conversations happening on Twitter,” the blog post said.

“if you see an edited Tweet it’s because we’re testing the edit button. This is happening and you’ll be okay,” Twitter tweeted on Thursday.

The edit feature is to be tested on a smaller group of paid users, subscribers of Twitter Blue, to gather feedback on how it works. This includes potential user abuse, so the company can streamline the feature.

The feature will give users a 30-minute window to mend their tweets and the edited tweet will show up with a label showing a timestamp of modification. Other users reading the edited tweet can see the editing history of the tweet.

“For context, the time limit and version history play an important role here. They help protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said,” Twitter said.

Twitter Blue subscribers already have an “Undo Tweet” feature that gives users a 30-second window to cancel posting a tweet if they spot any error.

Twitter Blue is currently available only in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. The blog post did not reveal roll out plans of the Edit Tweet feature to the rest of its 237.8 million unpaid users.

Twitter announced it was working on an edit button in April and in August, app researcher Jane Manchun Wong looked into how edited tweets may behave when embedded on different sites.
