Tribute to my brother Churchill Onyeji

-

Dee Churchill was supremely intelligent fellow, delightable and ever smiling. He was destined to become one of the best of his generation, and he did.

By Eugene Onyeji

If there was any individual that I loved so much with my whole heart in this life, then that man had to be Churchill Onyeji, my closely related cousin.

It is for this reason that the news of his death on Sunday morning came as a rude shock to me. In fact, it was very hard for me to accept the fact of Dee Churchill Onyeji’s passing. No! It can’t be. Right then, I decided not go to Church that day.

Distressed as I was, I made the frantic calls to his USA phone number, but did not get any response. I called his younger brother, Dee Stanley and his numbers were unavailable. Chika’s phone rang but she did not pick.

Still troubled, I started praying that it must be fake news, given that I got his last WhatsApp message on Tuesday, July 12, 2022.

Recalling how we used to watch late night movies back in the day I lived with his parents. The jokes and Chess game (he taught me how to play chess), then the confirmation came! Chika returned my call and from that moment, I have been asking how, why? Am yet to get any answer.

Dee Churchill has never denied me of any request I made to him. I recall during my wedding in 2003, I had called him to give me one of his cars, and without hesitation, he provided me with his BMW and a driver who drove my wife to Church and also brought us home after the reception.

I can’t forget our first visit to his house at Anthony Village, he ushered me and my wife to his private living room upstairs and we eat together. Dee Churchill and his wife paid us a visit shortly after at Jakande Estate, Isolo.

Last year, St Thomas Anglican women, Umuagwu gave him an award and I was asked to contact him. Dee Churhill did not only accept the award, he sent money through me to the women in appreciation of the recognition.

This is a Big loss to Onyeji family and to the lives that you have touched. I have no doubt you left an indelible footprint on the sands of time before your demise.

Adieu my brother. I love you but God loves you more! Till we meet again rest on!
