Tribute to Ezeokwelume

-

Like the cedars of Lebanon, he came from small humble beginnings, soared tall above his peers and contemporaries, established firm foundations, flourished through generations, and finally left the stage, a complete emblem of fulfillment. Chief Emmanuel Nweke Ezeokwelume finally returned to his creator, with a good account of his stewardship on earth.

Born 90 years ago in Egbengu Nimo, in Njikoka Local Government Area Anambra State of Nigeria, Chief Emmanuel embraced Christianity at a time when the environs were shrouded in idolatry. A devout Catholic and a farmer, he made a name for himself through agriculture, proving to all that the way to success is hard-work and integrity, no matter one’s vocation.

Retiring home from Delta State after his accomplishments as a youth, Chief Emmanuel became the encyclopedic repository of the truths and roots of the history of Egbengu community in Nimo, being the oldest surviving son of Ezeokwelume clan in Nimo. He was the final seat of judgment for all who sought honest resolutions to ancestral issues without bias.

Even in his old age, Chief Emmanuel remained zealous for God, and still oversaw the baptism of new converts to Christianity. He left a legacy of favour and respect for his many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom he had set on the foundation of western education and gainful self-employment, even though he did not attend school himself.
