The Federal Ministry of Transportation has invited the leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) for a meeting over the lingering face-off between the union and the International Oil Companies (IOCs).
Recall that the union had suspended a three day warning strike from the nation’s ports.
The refusal of the IOCs to comply with the payment has allegedly lingered for about a year.
The Nigerian Ports Authority last week suspended the operations of the IOCs in connection with the development.
According to a letter of invitation signed by S. U Galandichi, Director, Maritime Service for the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry on Tuesday, stressed the need to proffer solution to the crisis.
It read: “Sequel to the two weeks ultimatum given by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria to embark on a strike as a result of failure of stevedoring contractors firms to pay their workers, there is an urgent need to address the lingering issue.
“Accordingly, I am direct to invite you for a meeting to discuss and find lasting solution to the issue.”
When contacted President General of the union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju confirmed the meeting , even as he added that meeting for Wednesday is centred on the lingering non payment of wages for dockworkers by the multinationals.
