President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday night explained why there is a need to urgently change Nigeria’s existing tax law.
According to him, the country cannot make the desired progress with the current obsolete tax laws.
The president made this known during his first media chat with journalists in Lagos since his inauguration in 2024.
While insisting that the tax reform is here to stay, he added that the controversial federal government’s tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly will retool the economy for the benefit of all Nigerians.
Tinubu said, “The tax reforms are here to stay. We cannot just continue doing what we did yesterday in today’s economy; we cannot retool the economy with old laws.”
He added, “I have a clear focus on what Nigerians need and what must be done. It is not just going to be an Eldorado for everybody. The new dawn is here, and I am convinced that everyone should embrace it.”
TheNiche had earlier reported that the tax reform bill was rejected by Northern governors and the National Economic Council because they were not seen as beneficial to Nigerians.
Since their transmission to the National Assembly, the bills have continued to generate mixed reactions.
