Tinubu hosts Sanusi after ex-CBN Gov met with Niger coup leaders

Tinubu met with Sanusi in Abuja, shortly after he received a high delegation of the Nigeria Islamic Ulama

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received the former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday night.

The meeting which was held behind closed doors comes after the former Emir of Kano met with the military junta that ousted the democratically elected President of Niger Republic, Muhamad Bazoum.

Sanusi arrived at the Presidential Villa around 8:25pm, moments after a high delegation of the Nigeria Islamic Ulama met with the President.

However, when asked about the details of his visit to Niger, Sanusi simply said, “It’s fine”.

Prior to this development, President Tinubu in his capacity as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had handed down a seven-day ultimatum to the military junta in Niger Republic to return power to the democratically elected president.  

He also announced a number of sanctions which included closing borders linking Niger, indefinite stoppage of flight activities and distribution of power to the country.

The former Lagos State governor also threatened military action and wrote the leadership of the National Assembly to approve the deployment of military personnel to the troubled Niger.  

On Tuesday, however, Niger’s junta turned down the latest diplomatic mission from African countries.
