Three-storey building collapses in Yaba, rescue underway

A three-storey building undergoing construction collapsed in the Akanbi crescent area of Yaba, Lagos, on Saturday. 

The building collapsed into a nearby building, and it is feared that many are trapped in the rubble.

Some eyewitnesses said that parts of the building collapsed last year and that despite the police getting notified of it, construction resumed at the site.

“we are not surprised at today’s building collapse because part of it collapsed last year and we thought that the government would stop further construction on it but we were wrong,” They said.

Since the collapse, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other emergency responders have rescued two persons at the scene of the three-story building 

Those rescued include a 14-year-old boy, who was sent on an errand to buy food for workers on site, and an adult male.

The rescue operations were jointly performed by LASEMA, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, fire fighters, the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Red Cross and other sister agencies.

NEMA Lagos Territorial Office Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed that five persons were trapped underneath the rubbles while two of them were rescued, he said, “A three- storey building under construction at 16 Akanbi crescent off Adesina Adesina Street, Harvey, Sabo Yaba collapsed trapping about 5 workers.
