Thirteen travellers die, one survives after two buses collided in Ondo

An accident involving between two commercial buses at Abule Panu before Ose Bridge along the Owo-Ikare highway in Ondo State has claimed the lives of thirteen passengers.

Confirming the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo State Sector Command said the two buses collided and went up in flames.

TheNiche also gathered that the accident happened on Saturday morning, and that one person survived the auto crash with serious injuries.

According to an eyewitness, one of the buses coming from the Ikare axis had a tyre blow out and had a head-on collision with the bus loaded with fabric coming from the Owo axis.

He went on to add that 13 of the travellers were burnt to death, while one escaped with injury.

Also speaking on the development, Ondo Sector Commander of the FRSC, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, said the injured victim was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while remains of the dead were deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.

He said, “The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo State Sector Command, regrets to inform the public about a road traffic crash that occurred today, December 28, 2024 at Abule Panu, before Ose Bridge, on Owo-Ikare highway, Ondo State.

“The fatal crash, which occurred at about 10.14 am, claimed 13 lives of commuters in two buses.

“A total of 14 people were in­volved, out of which 13 were burnt beyond recognition, while only one was rescued alive with serious injuries.

“The men of FRSC, Police and Fire Service were swiftly at the crash scene for rescue. The injured victim was tak­en to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, while the dead ones were deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.”

Ibitoye, therefore, ad­vised motorists to be patient on the road and ensure the maintenance of their vehicles before hitting the road.

He also urge passengers to speak out against dangerous driving.
