Singer-songwriter Tems (full name Temilade Openiyi) says her debut album Born in the Wild, a chat topper on Apple Music released about two weeks ago, encapsulates her life journey from “cub to lioness” or like a transformation from a cocoon to a butterfly.

“It speaks of surviving a mental wilderness that comes with life, and coming to a place where one can thrive. It’s about accepting oneself, and embodying the woman I was born to be. It shows the different dimensions of who Tems is, and her journey from a cub to a lioness,” she explained in a recent chat.

The Grammy-winner’s debut album made a remarkable impact on the global music scene with a number 28 entry on the official albums chart in the United Kingdom upon its release on June 7.

It marked Tems’ first entry into the UK charts, an achievement that surpasses that of her Nigerian female counterparts.

Born in the Wild alsotopped the charts in 22 countries on Apple Music just two days after its release.

Tems, a multitalented Nigerian-Briton artiste who studied economics in South Africa, also disclosed she was perceived as being slow and finding it difficult to understand people at work, which led to her demotion the position of personal assistant where she had a stint before her foray into music.
