Technical committee faults Keshi World Cup outing

-

The Technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has berated the Super Eagles chief Coach, Stephen Keshi for the not too impressive performance of the team at the last World cup in Brazil.

Spokesman of the committee, Paul Bassy said after their meeting on Wednesday in Abuja that the caliber of players Keshi took to the World Cup was the reason the team did not go beyond where they got to at the World Cup.

“We can’t pretend that everything went fine as if nothing happened. Most of us believed that we would had done better than where we were, the quality of players who were invited. Though the board believed that Keshi’s contract should be renewed but we as technical committee believed that we also need to go beyond where we found ourselves especially in Brazil.

“Some of us believed that moving forward we have to look backwards. In looking at what happened in the past, we reviewed Super Eagles’ performance at the just concluded World Cup. Where the team went wrong.

Speaking about their deliberation on the request by Keshi to be paid monthly salary of N10 million, Paul Bassey said they have advised the executive board to look inwards before agreeing to pay Keshi as much as N10m which he had earlier advocated for as well as car and house which he insisted must be part of the new contract.

“Some of the thing we also looked at was that if we were not able to pay Keshi N5m regularly, if we want to give him more we should make sure that we can pay. Is not enough to agree that we want to pay him N10m just as we have read is what Keshi wants on paper.

“Let’s not make mistakes due to what happened in the past. We shouldn’t be in a hurry to take any decision. We have advised the board, is left for them to take final decision.

It would be recalled that the Board members last week Thursday mandated the technical committee led by Barr. Chris Green to initiate fresh contractual talks with Keshi whose contract with Super Eagles expired with the 2014 World Cup.

On the proposed congress scheduled to hold on Thursday, Bassey who is also a member of CAF Media committee said it was impossible to convey a general congress within one week.

“We must learn to follow CAF and FIFA rules. The law says for a congress to hold, the members should be given one to three months’ notice. The Board should be able to come out with a new date with the status followed in order to avoid the mistakes of the past.”
