Abuja has been urged by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) to honour in 2025 its outstanding promises to the union members to ensure their economy stability as well as that of the general populace across the board.
SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim in his New Year message said fulfilling the promises is critical for industrial harmony and ensuring the welfare of university staff.
He added that SSANU is closely monitoring the Tax Reform Bills now in the National Assembly and their implications for the economic stability of workers.
Ibrahim stressed the need for inclusive and transparent policymaking, saying SSANU is committed to advocating for reforms that protect its members’ interests while fostering national economic growth.
The union expressed concern over escalating electricity costs in universities which hinder effective operations and urged the federal government to take immediate action to resolve the crisis.
“We urge the honourable minister of education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and his team to continue to maintain and strengthen the established relationship with SSANU,” Ibrahim pleaded.
“It is imperative that the federal government fulfils its outstanding promises to the union, as these commitments are critical to industrial harmony and the welfare of university staff.
“Additionally, the rising cost of living, inflation, cash crunch, and technological challenges continue to impact our members.
“SSANU will persist in advocating for policies that enhance its members’ economic and professional well-being while pushing for technological upgrades to modernise our universities.”
SSANU reiterated that the prevailing national insecurity is a significant barrier to sustainable growth and asked the government to intensify efforts to address the challenge.
Ibrahim urged SSANU members to remain united and steadfast in pursuing fairness, equity, and justice, expressing optimism that the union could overcome challenges and achieve new milestones in 2025 through collective efforts.
