At least four European countries and one Asian nation have booked their places in the Round of 16 at the ongoing Women’s World Cup (WWC) in New Zealand and Australia.

Spain and Japan qualified for the next round last week Wednesday after winning their opening two fixtures in Group C.

Both teams with 6 points each will now meet in the final group game to determine who will top the table. Currently, Spain are leading on goal difference.

Similarly, Sweden qualified from Group G on Friday after walloping Italy 5-0 and will only need a draw against Argentina to guarantee the top spot.

Switzerland progressed from Group A, following the conclusion of their fixtures on Sunday with a goalless draw against co-hosts, New Zealand.

With the result, however, New Zealand became the first host nation to be knocked out at the group stages.

Norway also joined Switzerland in the next round of the tournament after thrashing the Philippines 6-0 in the other game.

The Swiss girls finished as the group winners, while Norway took the second spot ahead of New Zealand on goal difference.

Meanwhile, the Super Falcons will attempt to join these five countries in the Round of 16, when they take on the Republic of Ireland today.

The Nigerian girls currently top Group B table on goal difference after a draw with Olympics champions, Canada and a 3-2 win over co-hosts, Australia.

A win for the West Africans will guarantee qualification into the next and a top-place finish, while a draw will also secure a spot in the rounds of 16 no matter the outcome of the game between Australia and Canada.
