Sowore, others flee protest after security agents allegedly fire gunshots, tear gas

Human rights activist and organizer of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, fled the demonstration venue after security agencies allegedly fired gunshots and tear gas.

Security operatives, comprising police and military officers, took over the protest grounds at about 7 a.m. on Monday morning.

Sowore, who was wearing a black shirt, trousers, and a cap, was heard in a video trending on social media warning the security agents not to fire tear gas at protesters.

The protesters were demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021.

At the protest ground in Abuja, some young men stormed the streets, chanting: “Free Nnamdi Kanu.”

However, after a few minutes, gunshots were heard from a distance, forcing Sowore and other protesters to flee the scene.
