South West on 63.54m dwarfs other zones in mobile phone ownership

South West on 63.54m dwarfs other zones, lifted by Lagos on 26.46m subscribers

Lagos had 26,460,867 active mobile telephone lines in the fourth quarter of 2022 (Q4 2022) – more than the state’s population of 20 million – which helped push the South West to the top of zonal phone ownership among Nigeria’s 213 million people.

Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) mobile voice subscription data shows the South West   at 63,541,029 was trailed by the North Central (42,616, 911), North West (42,616, 911), South South (40, 805, 145), South East (32, 514, 966), North East (21, 548, 669),  and North East (21, 544, 848).

“The total number of active voice subscribers in Q4 2022 was 222,571,568 from the 195,463,898 reported in Q4 2021, indicating a growth rate of 13.87 percent. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, this grew by 4.89 percent,” the NBS said.

“Also, in Q4 2022, the total number of active internet subscribers stood at 154,847,901 from 141,971,560 reported in Q4 2021, showing an increase of 9.07 percent.

“On a quarter-on-quarter basis, this grew by 1.35 percent.”

“On state profile analysis, Lagos State had the highest number of active voice subscribers in Q4 2022 with 26,460,867, followed by Ogun with 12,994,352 and Kano with 12,373,201.

“On the other hand, Bayelsa recorded the least with 1,571,692, followed by Ebonyi and Ekiti with 1,920,996 and 2,001,846 respectively.

“In addition, Lagos State had the highest number of active internet subscribers in Q4 2022 with 18,702,394, followed by Ogun with 9,206,614 and Kano with 8,470,131.

“On the other hand, Bayelsa recorded the least with 1,101,002, followed by Ebonyi and Ekiti with 1,264,825 and 1,474,970 respectively.

“However, MTN had the highest share of subscriptions in Q4 2022.”

According to the NBS, as reported by Vanguard, the South West also led other zones in internet subscriptions in Q4 2022 as follows:

  • South West – 44, 787, 635
  • North Central – 29,609, 278
  • North West – 28, 119, 575
  • South South – 22, 506, 266
  • North East – 14, 994, 213
  • South East – 14, 626, 124

Porting activities

A total 2,829 lines ported into other networks and 2,829 ported out, the NBS added.
