So far, the incoming governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has said the right things in preparation to becoming the 6th democratically elected governor of Anambra State tomorrow, March 17.

He promised as governor to patronise Nigerian-made Innoson Vehicles as a way of promoting the brand and solidifying its production line which is based in Nnewi, Anambra State.

By the decision, Soludo is departing from the style of the outgoing Governor Willie Obiano who was once chided by the state lawmakers for obsessing foreign-made vehicles.

Soludo has also by the decision, taught the federal government some lessons in supporting local businesses, encouraging job creation and spurring the economy. For instance, President Muhammadu Buhari has in the last six years spent N5 billion on purchasing Toyota and BMW vehicles for the Villa, as par reporting by PREMIUM TIMES.  This could make some impact if the beneficiary were a Nigerian automaker.

Soludo has also promised to promote the locally produced Akwete Igbo fabric by making his cloth line from them. The impact is likely to be instantaneous. More demands could trigger growth in that local economy which will eventually benefit many households involved in its production.

Soludo also promised to run a government fit for purpose, small but effective machinery. As a starter, he promised to make his inauguration simple – no stadium crowd, no Gala, no roadshow. Just oath-taking in the Government House Awka, Inspect a Guard of Honour at the same venue and head to church to thank God. From there, head straight to his office for the business of running the state.

A statement by his media aide, Joe C Anatune, said about the inauguration.

“After the official swearing-in, Prof Chukwuma Soludo will inspect a guard of honour and consequently makes his inaugural address to the people of Anambra State. Thereafter, an inter-denominational service will hold briefly before the new Governor immediately sets out to work

“Please note this event is strictly low key and devoid of the usual merry-making and unbridled celebrations usually associated with occasions of this nature

“The Governor-elect however remains grateful to everyone for the outpouring of goodwill messages as well as the continuous support from well-wishers and numerous supporters within and across the globe.”

The stakes are high. A Soludo’s success will inspire other states to vote his kind.
