Soludo offers to be Nnamdi Kanu’s surety to secure release

Soludo promised to cater for Kanu if released to him, assuring that he would bring him to the authorities any time he is required to do so.

Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has said he is ready to stand as surety for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to secure the latter’s release.

A Federal High Court in Abuja refused Kanu bail despite his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021. The Court of Appeal also stood down its judgement granting Kanu freedom.

Soludo, who spoke on Saturday during the kickoff of the campaigns of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for this year’s general elections at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, appealed for the unconditional release of the IPOB leader.

He said: “I am making a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. If he cannot be released unconditionally, I want him released to me and I will stand surety for him.

“We need Nnamdi Kanu in the roundtable conversation to discuss the insecurity in the South East. We must end insecurity in the South East and we need Nnamdi Kanu to be around.”

Soludo promised to cater for Kanu if released to him, assuring that he would bring him to the authorities any time he is required to do so.

The governor visited Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Security (DSS) in May 2022 and said the IPOB leader was not happy with the killings in the South East.

Kanu was first arraigned on December 23, 2015, and was later granted bail on April 25, 2017.

He fled the country in September 2017 following an invasion of his house by the military in his Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia country home in Abia State.

He was re-arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria and has been facing trial since then.
