Social pressure on him to get married drives Uber operator to suicide after hospital admission for depression

After his was discharged from hospital, he relocated to his mother’s house for close monitoring, but his family reportedly continued to mount pressure on him to get married and have children, which led him to leave the house.

“In his quest for a new house, someone sublet one of the rooms in her home to him. He has been in that house since May 2024 ….

“The person who sublet the house told him three days ago to find another house, as the owner had told them [all the tenants] to leave. He became depressed [more] and hanged himself” – source.

A man who operated an Uber taxi has reportedly committed suicide, caving under pressure from family and friends to get married when he felt he could not afford to do so.

Muftau Musa, 46, reportedly took his life in Osogbo, leaving a note directing whosoever found his remains to check for further details, with information on his phone about how his relatives could be contacted, but stressed that nobody should cry over his death.

A source told Leadership that Musa had no wife or children and battled depression for the past five years.

According to the source, the  man attempted to hang himself in December 2023 but was stopped by neighbours, and later made another suicide attempt by drinking insecticide and pesticide, which led to his admission in hospital for two months.

After was discharged from hospital, he relocated to his mother’s house for close monitoring, but his family reportedly continued to mount pressure on him to get married and have children, which led him to leave the house.

“In his quest for a new house, someone sublet one of the rooms in her home to him. He has been in that house since May 2024,” the source recounted.

“The house rent expired in December, but he was given until the end of January to vacate, as the house owner wanted to renovate the house.

“The person who sublet the house told him three days ago to find another house, as the owner had told them [all the tenants] to leave. He became [more] depressed and hanged himself.”

Osun Police Command has reportedly taken over the matter.
