Shekarau also appealed to political parties in Nigeria to put forward their best candidates during the 2027 presidential poll

A former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has said the credibility of presidential candidates should be the priority of Nigerians in 2027, and not the zone they are from.
He made this known while featuring on Channels Television programme, ‘Sunday Politics’.
The ex-governor’s comment comes as the debate on where power should be situated after the next presidential poll in 2027 goes on.
While some politicians are advocating the return of power to the northern part of the country, others argued that the southern region, which produced the incumbent president, Bola Tinubu, is yet to exhaust its eight years in office.
Just this weekend, the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso met with former president, Olusegun Obasanjo on the matter.
Reacting to the development, Shekarau argued that the region the candidate comes from should not be the focus at this point but his or her ability to deliver and credibility.
He further urged political parties in the country to put forward their best hands, arguing that if they offer bad candidates, the county will end up with a bad leader.
He said, “All the parties should come up with their planning in a situation whereby they make the best of choices.
“But for Nigerians now to decide, our concern is ‘Let’s look at the candidates produced by the parties.”
Shekarau added, “Our challenge is that all the parties should give Nigerians correct candidates so we have the best to choose from.
“But if you give us all evils, we will choose the best from the evils.”
