Afrobeat star, Seun Kuti, has narrated what led to the annulment of the 1993 presidential election, which was allegedly won by late business mogul, MKO Abiola.

According to the singer, a fight over money between former Head of State, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida popularly known as IBB and Abiola led to the annulment of the poll.

Abiola contested the 1993 presidential election against the candidate of the National Republican Convention (NRC), Bashir Tofa, under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

While the SDP candidate was the clear favourite to win the election, IBB annulled the poll.

Following the annulment, Abiola demanded the restoration of his mandate from the Nigerian government and this led to his arrest, incarceration  and death.

“There were rumors back then that Samuel Doe’s money caused a fight between IBB and Abiola, this made the former Head of State refuse to give him the presidency.”

Seun Kuti further alleged that late journalist, Dele Giwa was killed because he was planning to expose a wealthy Nigerian drug dealer.

“It was alleged that Dele Giwa was about to expose a big man in Nigeria for selling drugs. The best hard drugs in this Lagos are sold in Island, children of the rich are selling it.

“What killed Dele Giwa then? How many musicians, actors have been caught over their connection to hard drugs before the advent of Yahoo? Many people in this country are compromised in this drug dealing business,” he added.
