Senator embarks on free eye surgery for 400 people in Yobe

-

About 4,000 people living with sight problems have been treated and regained their sight courtesy of Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan,  (Yobe North Senatorial District) who is also the majority leader.

Senator Lawan engaged a team of medical doctors and nurses for the surgeon and provision of glasses at the two designated centres in Gashua and Nguru towns in Yobe State.

Gashua Centre comprises Jakusko and Yusufari, while Nguru caters for Machina and Karasuwa local government areas, respectively.

During a visit to the Nguru centre,  Senator Lawan said that he embarked on the free eye surgery and treatment as part of his efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and old ones living with sight problems and could not afford to get treated.

“The intervention here is largely to capture those people who have this sight challenges and largely poor people. Many of them are living with this challenges for many years without treatment.

“So I was prompted by that feeling that if I do this, it will help these set of disadvantaged people in our senatorial District. I am quite happy and pleased to say that the response from our local governments, our traditional rulers have been quite remarkable. They have supported this programme very well by mobilizing people and even of course providing the venue for this kind of an activity.”

One of the beneficiaries who gave his name as Musa Sulayman expressed happiness over the gesture.

He said, “I am 62 years old,  I lost my sight five years ago. I am poor,  I have no one to assist me,  I hardly afford one square meal,  today I benefited from Senator Lawan’s free eye surgery. I am happy I have regained my sight. ”

Senator Lawan, however, promised that the exercise would be continued in the area to ensure the recovery of sights of the poor and old ones.
