Former England midfielder, Paul Scholes has backed the decision to snub Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and name Manchester City’s Rodri as the best footballer of the year.
He made his position known while featuring on the latest edition of “The Overlap’s Fan Debate,’ where he defiantly defended Rodri’s emergence as the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.
The decision to make the 28-year-old Spanish midfielder this year’s Ballon d’Or recipient sparked a lot of controversy on social media.
While some netizens agreed with the organizers of the award, many football fans disagreed and argued that Vinicius was more deserving of the prize.

Wadding into the controversy, Scholes
argued with podcaster, Rory Jennings about Rodri’s abilities and his Ballon d’Or win.
Jennings had suggested that Rodri was not a ‘beautiful footballer’ and is inferior to Vinicius.
Responding, the Manchester United legend disagreed, saying: “I think he is a better footballer than Vinicius Junior.
“Vinicius will probably win you more games but Rodri, I think, he’s a beautiful footballer.”
