A group of concerned Bayelsa indigenes and stakeholders today launched a sensitisation campaign on the need for free, fair and credible supplementary election on Saturday, January 9, 2016.
Unveiling the #SaveSouthernIjaw campaign in Abuja, the spokesperson of the group, Mr Femi Lawson, said the campaign was aimed at preventing the recurrence of the violence and military interference that marred the December governorship election in Bayelsa State.
“We are trying to create awareness to make sure the Nigerian public rise up in defence of democracy. The event of the last election was nothing encouraging; and it sends a very dangerous signal about the growth of democracy in our nation.
“We want to make sure everyone stands up for what is right and kick against the militarisation of elections in Bayelsa and in any other state for that matter… this election is going to be a major index to measure our readiness as a nation to advance from where we were between 2011 and 2015.
“Democracy should be advancing not retrogressing. This is why we are at the Unity Fountain, and will be here for the next three days to continue the advocacy campaign for free and fair elections in Nigeria, and ensure people are not intimidated at any point in time once they are out to vote,” Femi Lawson said.
