Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said his government has agreed to pay workers in the state N85,000 as minimum wage, adding that he hopes to increase it to N100,000 in few months time.

He made this known on Wednesday evening during an interview on Channels TV themed “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu.”

Speaking during the chat, he said, “You mentioned minimum wage and what I need to throw in for my people. I’m glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we’ve discussed with our union, is N85,000 today.”

He went on to state that Lagos State is not paying the amount to outshine its peers, adding that it agreed on the figure because it has the capacity to do so.

“It’s not a competition, so I’m not going to say that we’re paying more than some other people; it’s a function of affordability and a function of capacity,” the governor added.

We increased our salary earlier in the year and would like to come in January and say I’ve been able to increase the minimum wage in Lagos to N100,000.” he further said.

The Governor also spoke on several issues such as transportation, road projects and measures being taken to provide relief for the residents amid the prevalent hunger and hardship in Nigeria.

In July, President Bola Tinubu signed the new ₦70,000 minimum wage bill into law, ending months of disagreements and negotiations between representatives of government, labour unions and the organised private sector.
