Last weekend, the Terra Kulture event centre was abuzz as Governor Sanwo-Olu, Governor Dapo Abiodun, and members of the Kuti family attended the premiere of Bolanle Austen-Peters’ latest biopic, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. The film, written by award-winning Tunde Babalola, vividly portrays the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a prominent justice advocate and the mother of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti has garnered acclaim for its compelling storytelling, unique characters, and exceptional craftsmanship. The film chronicles the journey of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, from her pioneering days as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage to Israel Ransome-Kuti. Together, the couple fought against oppression and established the Abeokuta Women’s Union, sparking a formidable battle against colonial and traditional rulers. The narrative expertly contrasts Funmilayo’s relentless activism with her roles as a wife and mother, showcasing the resilience of a woman who made history.
