The goalkeepers put up brilliant saves in the game, as Hornets goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann denied Son Heung-min at close range in the second half after Lloris had produced an equally superb save from Josh King at the other end.

Joao Pedro had a late penalty appeal waved off after Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris raced out of his goal to deny the forward.

But it was Sanchez who scored the only goal of the match in the 96th minute from Son Heung-min’s cross to continue Antonio Conte’s unbeaten run in the Premier League.

The game was paused in the closing stages because of a medical emergency in the crowd, leading to eight minutes of stoppage time.

Tottenham with the narrow 1-0 win go within two points of fourth-placed north London rival Arsenal, who lost 2-1 to leaders Manchester City earlier on Saturday, and who have played two games more than Spurs.

Meanwhile, a sixth consecutive Premier League defeat leaves relegation threatened Watford in 17th, two points above the bottom three, having played two games more than Burnley, who are directly below them.
