Luis Suarez scored his second goal of the World Cup and Edison Cavani opened his own account on Monday as Uruguay romped to a 3-0 win over Russia to snatch the top spot in Group A.
Russia had the advantage going into the final group game having scored more goals than the South Americans, but that edge was surrendered as they succumbed to the superior firepower of the Uruguayans.
Uruguay held a commanding 2-0 halftime lead courtesy of Suarez’s free kick; and a Denis Cheryshev own goal made things worse for the hosts.
Diego Laxalt’s shot came off Russian winger Cheryshev for the own goal and Russia’s job got all the harder when Igor Smolnikov was sent off for two yellow cards after 36 minutes.
Late in the second half, Cavani nailed Russia’s coffin with a third goal as Uruguay continued a perfect run that has seen them win all their group matches; scoring five and conceding no goal.
It was also a memorable outing for Uruguay goalkeeper, Fernando Muslera, who made his 100th appearance and celebrated same with a clean sheet.
In the other Group A tie which was of little or no importance, Egypt surprisingly lost 1-2 to Saudi Arabia.
However, the game will be remembered for a long time to come as Egyptian Goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary became the oldest player in World Cup history. He also saved a penalty in the match.
El Hadary is 45 years and 161 days old.
The Saudis will also be happy going home on a winning note.
