Rooney says Partey ‘lucky’ not to give away penalty after Man United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal

Rooney argued that even though Partey got a slight touch on the ball before hitting Amad, another referee might have seen it differently

Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney has said Arsenal’s midfielder, Thomas Partey was ‘very lucky’ to avoid giving away a first-half penalty during his side’s Premier League 1-0 win against his former club at Old Trafford.

He made this known when asked if the Red Devils’s 37th-minute penalty appeal as Amad Diallo went down in the box after a challenge from Partey was worth an award of a spot kick.

TheNiche had earlier reported that the Gunners beat Manchester United on Sunday afternoon and returned to the top of the Premier League with the win.

A single goal from Trossard, who scored from a pass from Kai Havertz was enough to earn the North London club all the three points in the crucial encounter.

However, there was a moment during the match when Partey stuck out a leg which appeared to have brought down Amad Diallo, although replays suggest that the United player actually hit the Ghanaian midfielder’s rather than the other way around.

Despite this, Rooney while analysing the match on Sky Sports felt Partey was lucky not to get a penalty awarded against him in the match.

Speaking after the match, the ex England International said: “I don’t think this is a penalty [but] Partey is very lucky.

“He goes off his feet early and he fortunately just gets a nick on the ball. For me it’s not a penalty but Partey is very lucky.”
