Rivers police command dismisses Inspector over alleged kidnapping and extortion

-

The Police Command in Rivers State has taken decisive action against alleged misconduct within its ranks, dismissing Inspector Michael Odey for his purported involvement in the kidnapping and extortion of $3,000 from two individuals at gunpoint in Rivers.

Confirmation of Inspector Odey’s dismissal came from the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who issued a statement in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. According to the statement, Inspector Odey’s dismissal was ratified following the conclusion of Orderly Room proceedings and subsequent review by Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16, Yenagoa, AIG Alifa Omata.

“AIG Omata upheld the recommendation for dismissal from the Force, and as such, Odey was relieved of his duty, effective Feb. 7, 2024,” stated SP Iringe-Koko.

Moreover, the files of two other officers implicated in the incident, ASP Doubara Edonyabo and ASP Talent Mungo, have been forwarded to the police headquarters for further scrutiny.

“Similarly, Edonyabo and Mungo have been queried and recommended for dismissal in compliance with established procedures,” Iringe-Koko emphasized.

The recommendation for disciplinary action against Edonyabo and Mungo has been sent to the Secretary of the Nigeria Police Force for necessary processing. Their cases will undergo comprehensive review by the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission to ensure a fair and just resolution.

SP Iringe-Koko reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of law enforcement and urged residents to promptly report any misconduct by police officers. She assured the public that officers found culpable of misconduct would face appropriate consequences, emphasizing the command’s dedication to fairness and justice.

Investigations into two additional cases of a similar nature involving the three officers are ongoing, further underlining the command’s commitment to upholding accountability and transparency within its ranks.
