Rights Commission condemns use of force against unarmed youths exercising their right to protest

Violation of the right to peaceful protest and assembly, freedom of expression and the press and other associated rights by law enforcement agencies against #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria agitators has been condemned by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
NHRC Executive Secretary Tony Ojukwu, SAN said dispersal of protesters and journalists using excessive force, resulting in injuries of several persons, is unacceptable and a clear infringement on the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.
Ojukwu’s position is contained in a statement issued on his behalf by NHRC Corporate Affairs and External Linkages Director Obinna Nwakonye.
He insisted citizens have the right to peacefully assemble and to express their grievances as guranteed in the Nigerian Constitution and International Human Rights Instruments Nigeria has signed and ratified.
Ojukwu stressed journalists also have the right to carry out their constitutional duties as the watchdog of society without fear or intimidation.
“We call on the relevant authorities to investigate these incidents and hold perpetrators accountable,” he said.
“At the NHRC, we will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary steps to ensure that human rights are protected and promoted in Nigeria.”
The NHRC implored Nigerians who have credible evidence or information of the violation of the rights of protesters or of law enforcement agents or of the media or of innocent citizens, and notify the commission through the appropriate channels of communication.
