“I am not afraid of death,” Remi Tinubu has riposted to a Bauchi Islamic preacher who said in a viral video she deserved because she, a Christian, married a Muslim, Bola Tinubu, who is now the President.
Remi married Tinubu in 1987 and she explained that having reached the age of 64, she is not afraid to die for her Christian faith.
The preacher also described as a scam the Muslim/Muslim ticket of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima which brought them to power.
Remi reacted to the death threat on Tuesday when she visited the Emir of Bauchi, Rilwan Adamu, before inaugurating projects in the state.
“I want to thank his excellency (Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed). He keeps assuring me that I am safe in Bauchi. But I want to say that I am too old to be afraid. If God has granted me over 60 years on earth, I shouldn’t be afraid of death,” she said.
“I thank God that you encouraged me to come. Nigeria belongs to all of us and this is the time for us to unite more than ever before.”
Mohammed condemned the death threat and described it as a “national embarrassment” and outrageous.
He told her: “You have distinguished yourself not only as a distinguished Senator but as a politician that has opened the new frontier of politics and politicking.
“Your Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) is giving hope because you have set aside all the differences of politics and partisanship.
“Of course, I am aware of some of the challenges and threats to your life and person by somebody from this state. I was so disappointed and frustrated. But you made my day as a courageous mother; you decided to come to Bauchi State.”
Mohammed also told Adamu: “This distinguished lady has shown that Nigeria is really working and that Nigeria is one and nobody can play politics with our lives. We are very grateful.”
Then he reiterated to Remi: “Your life is more important to us than our own lives. Nothing will happen to you.”
Remi later inaugurated a community IT centre built by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) at Yan Doka Road and Alternative High School for Girls, supported by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) at the Federal Low-Cost.
She expressed commitment to ensuring women and girls have a better access to ICT facilities to improve their digital skills.
