Convener of the Revolution Now protest, Omoyele Sowore, has asked top singer, Burna Boy, who styles himself as legendary singer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, to prove that he merits the comparison.
Fela, the late Afro Beat legend is reputed for opposing anti-people policies of the government. For his daring actions, he had regular brushes with many administrations in the country, especially the military.
Sowore and his colleagues in the Revolution Now have slated October 1, which is Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration, to protest the hikes in the price of fuel and electricity tariff.
Sowore’s request that Burna Boy join the protest is strategic. Burna Boy has four million followers on twitter, a huge asset for any mobiliser.
Burna Boy’s presence in any protest can change the tide due to his influence among young people, the category of Nigerians that Sowore wants to bring out on October 1.
Sowore tweeted @Burna Boy saying: “Hello @burnaboy, everywhere I turn people describe you as a revolutionary musician, the foreign media even celebrate you compare you to Fela Kuti, but I am yet to see you lead anyone to a police station carrying a coffin for head of state! Join #Oct1stProtest #RevolutionNow.”
