Students today gathered at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka to protest the lingering strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has kept them at home for two months with the gloomy prospect that it could last for another three months.

ASUU announced today after its National Executive Committee meeting that the 8-weeks old strike has been extended by another 12-weeks to give the government the time to resolve all the issues.

There were heavily armed and hooded security operatives, including men of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to provide security on the ground.

Also, men of the Department of State Services were among the joint security forces at the venue with scores of patrol vans.

The students called for immediate resolution of the crisis between the striking university lecturers and the Federal Government.

They chanted solidarity songs, stating they were tired of staying at home as the strike had caused a disruption to their academic calendar and affected their plans.

The students also displayed banners with inscriptions like ‘End ASUU strike now’, ‘Strike has killed our educational sector, we need to go back to school’, ‘We are tired of FG/ASUU’ and ‘Age no de my side’ among others

A mother who joined the protesting students, Mrs. Margret Akinwande, was quoted by The Nation that she joined the protest because of her children, urging the Federal Government as a matter of urgency to intervene in the situation.

Student activist Femi Adeyeye said the protest was a warning with a bigger one in the offing.
