Jose Mourinho believes Marcus Rashford faces too much pressure, but is happy with the way the striker is developing at Manchester United.

Rashford has made over 130 appearances for United since making his debut under Louis van Gaal in 2016 and has blossomed into a key player under Mourinho.

Although the 21-year-old is on a run of three goals in his last four England caps, he has scored just once in his 10 games this term for United during a difficult start to the campaign.

Rashford has been urged by some former players to improve his finishing or even leave Old Trafford to reach his potential, while Mourinho has already had to defend his treatment of him this year.

And the coach has dismissed suggestions the developing attacker is underwhelming, as he believes too much is expected of him.

“I think the pressure is probably too high,” Mourinho told reporters. “He just turned 21. How many players at 21 had more game time in a big club, for a big country and national team? How many players are getting this kind of opportunity to develop their potential? Not many.

“I think he’s having fantastic conditions to develop. He is still developing but he has fantastic conditions. Since Van Gaal brought him to the team, then I come and he played with me a lot, played in the national team, playing the World Cup, playing the Europa League final, playing two FA Cup finals. He’s having incredible opportunities to develop, which I think is what he’s doing.”

Rashford is currently contracted to United until 2020, though United have an option to extend for another year.

He scored the winning goal in an aware game against Bournemouth, which ended 2-1 in Man United favour. Martial equalized in the second half.
