Few hours after announcing his plans to march in Calabar for the June 12 protest, the police in Cross River have arrested Agba Jalingo, a journalist and rights activist.
It was gathered that the police in Cross River invited him for a chat at the police headquarters, Calabar, where he went to honour the invitation only to be arrested.
According to Cross River Watch, owned by Jalingo, the commissioner of police in Cross River State, Kayode Sikiru, invited Jalingo to the police headquarters to discuss the planned nationwide June 12 protest which Jalingo is said to be coordinating in the state.
After discussions, Mr Jalingo was reportedly referred to another officer who informed him that the police had received a petition which accused him of being an arms dealer, the newspaper said.
PREMIUM TIMES said the police spokesperson in the state, Irene Ugbo said: “There was a petition against him (Jalingo) that he is a member of drug dealers, so we called him to question him.”
“He is still writing his stuff (response to the petition). When he finishes we’ll let him go if we find him not wanting,” the spokesperson said.
