Police, area boys in gun duel at Tin Can port over extortion

The reign of impunity and control established by the massive extortion and corruption at the Lagos port roads came to a high point this afternoon as two factions of Area boys( Agboros) begin supremacy control of the Tin Can Island axis of the Lagos port.

An Eyewitness who is also a truck driver said that two factions of the Area Boys (Agboros) have started the fight on who will control the area.

The truck driver who identified himself as Emeka said, the Area boys started fighting themselves from the Tin Can second gate pursuing everybody, looting and exchanging gun fire with the security agencies.

“What happened is that two faction of the Agboros who have been collecting money from trucks and other vehicles stated fighting on who should control the area.


 They came with guns and other weapons attacking themselves. When the Police came, they exchange fire for fire with the Policemen.
 They pursue everybody inside the port, some people nealy enter the river . Look at here (second gate), they have looted all those people selling here, they even overpowered the police”.

Another eyewitness Iyabo who sells drinks at the second gate lamented how all her drinks were looted and many other wares including phones.


” The Area boys started fighting and you know them, they starred attacking everybody with weapons and bottles, when all of us ran away, they stole all our markets. See me now, I don’t have any market again, not even the bottles”.

The victims blame the police and security agencies for engaging the Area boys to help them collect money and now they are more powerful than them .They lamented that it is a dangerous trend for Area boys to be operating and collecting money in and around Lagos ports.

As at the time of filling this report, there were still heavy shooting at the first gate area of Tin Can port, while ports activities have been grounded.
