Plateau crisis: Anambra expands evacuation of indigenes from Jos

Following renewed hostilities in Jos, which have caused the Plateau State Government to re-impose a 24-hour curfew in the city, Anambra State Government has widened its evacuation of students of Anambra State origin from the University of Jos to include all Anambra indigenes in Jos who wish to return to the State.

The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba who made the disclosure in a statement, directed Anambra indigenes interested in the gesture to go to the GUO Motors station in Jos where officials of the State Liaison office in Abuja will identify them and, in conjunction with the transport company, arrange for their immediate travel.

The release added that the Governor Willie Obiano, has directed the State Liaison office in Abuja to monitor round the clock the safety of all Anambra students at the University of Jos, the NTA TV College, Jos, the College of Accountancy, Jos, the School of Forestry, Jos, the National Film Institute, Jos, and the Veterinary Institute, Jos to ascertain the safety of the indigenes. The governor further requested that every report is to be dispatched to him directly through electronic means and to the Secretary to the State Government for immediate action.

“The safety of every Anambra person everywhere in Nigeria and beyond is of paramount importance to the State Administration”, the statement.

On Tuesday, August 25, gunmen turned the state to a theatre of war, as they attacked Yelwan Zangam community, close to the permanent site of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), killing about 36 people and burning houses.

The attack occurred around 9:00 p.m. despite the dusk to dawn curfew imposed in Jos North council as well as Jos South and Bassa council areas.

The latest mayhem came on the heels of attack on Rukuba Road in Jos North, where 27 people who were travelling from Bauchi en-route Jos to Ikare in Ondo State were killed and 23 others were left injured.
