PEPC settles Shettima’s double-nomination, says APM case incompetent

-

Chairman of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), Justice Tsammani Haruna Tsammani has thrown out the petition of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) against the All Progressives Congress (APC) Vice Presidential candidate and current Vice President, Kashim Shettima, for being incompetent.

Recall that the APM is also a party in the case against the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 election.

The APM had argued that the nomination of Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate was in breach of the Electoral Act which forbids double nomination.

Shettima was a senatorial candidate at the time he was nominated as Tinubu’s running mate.

Justice Tsammani ruled that the case against Shettima’s qualification to run as APC presidential candidate’s running mate was a pre-election matter which ought to have been filed at the Federal High Court.

He also argued that the petitioner should have approached the Federal High Court within 14 days after the emergence of Shettima as Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC.

Besides, he said the APM was a meddlesome interloper in the affairs of the APC. He said the APM could only challenge Shettima’s nomination if it could show how the nomination affected it.

Justice Tsammani then threw out the petition for lacking merit.
