PDP also said Atiku had a history of leaving the party and returning whenever it suited his political ambitions.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has said the resignation of its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is not a loss to the main opposition party.

This was disclosed recently in a statement issued by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi.

Atiku formally left the PDP on Wednesday, July 16, after aligning with other opposition figures under the umbrella of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to forge a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In his resignation letter, he cited the party’s deviation from its founding principles as the main reason for his departure.

Reacting to the development, Abdullahi said Atiku was one of the individuals behind the long-standing internal crises within the PDP.

He added that the former vice president
had a history of leaving the party and returning whenever it suited his political ambitions.

“This is not the first time he’s leaving. The party cannot revolve around one man,” Abdullahi said.

He went on criticize what he described as a widespread perception in Nigeria — that the PDP had become a personal political vehicle for Atiku to use only when he needed it.

“One of the problems with Nigerian politics is the notion that PDP exists for Atiku Abubakar, who only turns to it when it’s convenient for him.” he added.

Abdullahi also questioned Atiku’s commitment to democratic values, implying that his decision to leave the PDP casts doubt on his ability to lead justly, even if he ever wins power.

Also speaking on the resignation, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said Atiku’s exit from the PDP poses no threat to its political dominance.

While addressing journalists on Wednesday, APC’s spokesman in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, insisted that the former VP’s defection to ADC changes nothing in 2027.

He also described the decision as a desperate move, adding that it shows that the opposition is weaker.

“Atiku’s actions reflect ambition without principle, not driven by ideology but by relentless personal pursuit.

“Whether PDP, ADC or another, Nigerians remain politically aware and will not be swayed.

“The APC stands as the only party delivering real governance, economic gains, and solid infrastructure,” Oladejo stated.
