Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expelled the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Also expelled from the party are the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, national secretary of the party, Sam Anyanwu, and legal adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade.

A statement on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the PDP, states: “In a landmark move to restore unity, discipline, and focus ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its ongoing 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, has expelled high-profile members Nyesom Wike, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), former Governor Ayo Fayose, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, and several others.

“The decision which was promptly ratified by an overwhelming majority of delegates, underscores the party’s commitment to eradicating internal divisions and anti-party conduct that have plagued its progress.”

Chief Olabode George, a former National Vice Chairman of the party (South), moved the motion for their expulsion, while the Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi, Hon. Samaila Burga, seconded the motion.

The PDP faction loyal to Wike had earlier moved to stop the convention through the court, but the party secured another judgment at a high court in Oyo, which the PDP said it relied on to hold the event.
