PDP defeats PRP to win Jos North/Bassa bye election

Jos North/Bassa bye election goes to the PDP’s Musa Agah. The PRP candidate came second while the APC finishes third. 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Musa Agah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  the winner of the Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency by-election.

Oyeyinka Oyeyinde, the INEC returning officer for the Jos North/Bassa bye election,  announced the result on Sunday in Jos.

Oyeyinde said that Agah scored 40,343 votes to beat his closest rival Adam Alkali of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) who came second with 37,757 votes.

He said that Joseph Aku of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came third with 26111 votes.

“Agah having satisfied the requirements of the law is declared the winner of Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency and is hereby returned elected,” he said.

Jos North/Bassa constituency has 30 registration areas, a  total of 599, 282 registered voters, out of which 108, 318 voters were accredited for the election, while a little over  108,000 voters cast their votes. 

In November last year, Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency seat was declared vacant by the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila following the death of Haruna Maitala of the APC.

The Jos North/Bassa federal constituency is made up of two local governments. Jos North and Bassa. 

Jos North is a Local Government Area in Plateau State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the city center of Jos.

It has an area of 291 km2 and a population of 429,300 at the 2006 census. The ethnic groups found in this area include: Afizere, Anaguta, Bache Irigwe and Berom.

Bassa is a Local Government Area in the north of Plateau State, Nigeria, bordering Kaduna and Bauchi States. Its headquarters are in the town of Bassa. 

It has an area of 1,743 km2 with other small towns like Miango, Mc Alley; originally called Biciza, Jengre, villages such as Binchin, Zukku, Kwal, Saya, Gurum among many others and a population of 186,859 at the 2006 census.
