The former England midfielder who tipped the Citizens as the favourite to win the league, said Manchester United has the required players to finish as the ‘best of the rest’.

Arsenal are currently top of the league after winning 8 out of nine matches but Manchester City are breathing down their neck in the second position and are just one point adrift.

Erik ten Hag’s United on the other hand are fifth, having taken 15 points from their opening eight league games, but they remained the only team that have beaten Arsenal this season.

They won four games in a row prior to the international break, losing 6-3 to Manchester City after the break but bounced back against Everton last weekend.

However, The Red Devils are nine points adrift of league leaders, Arsenal and are eight behind City, but have a game at hand over the duo.

Asked if United can finish behind Manchester City this season, Scholes said on BT Sport: “Yeah, I think they can; they’ve got the squad to do that.

“After those first two games, I was really concerned that United wouldn’t finish in the top six.

“But the way they’ve fought back, winning five of their last six games, they’ve given themselves a great chance. They do look like they could be the best of the rest.

“I think they’ve got the squad of players that means they could be.”
