Ozil hails Benzema after hattrick against Barcelona

Ozil took to social media after Real Madrid walloped Barcelona 4-0 at Camp Nou and labelled Benzema the best No.9 of his generation

Former Arsenal midfielder, Mesut Ozil has taken to social media to describe his ex-teammate and Real Madrid striker, Karim Benzema as the best number nine of his era.

Ozil made the admission as the French star led Spanish giants, Real Madrid to beat their arch-rivals, Barcelona 4-0 in the Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg tie on Wednesday night at Camp Nou.

A goal from Vinicius in the first minute of additional time of the first half and a hattrick from Benzema in the second half ensured Real Madrid trashed Barcelona and eliminated them from the cup competition.

After winning 4-0, Los Blancos advanced into the Copa del Rey finals on a 4-1 aggregate score line as they overcame a 1-0 deficit from the reverse fixture at Santiago Bernabeu.

In a tweet via his Twitter handle, Ozil, who played alongside Benzema at Real Madrid, wrote: “THE KING. My Boy Benzi! The best No 9 of our generation. #HalaMadrid @Benzema @realmadrid.”

Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil a few weeks ago, announced his retirement from football after amassing over 500 career appearances during his 17-year career.

His close to two decades in club football was spent at Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahçe and Basaksehir. 

Ozil, while announcing he will be hanging his boots, took to his Twitter handle and wrote: “After thoughtful consideration, I’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football.

He also added: “It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions.

“I want to thank my clubs – Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahçe, Basaksehir and the coaches who supported me, plus teammates who have become friends.”
