The Osun State University, Osogbo, called for a Parents-Teacher meeting this afternoon, August 16, to discuss the welfare of the students of the school.
The memo for the meeting, signed by the Registrar of the institution, G.A.A. Shittu, reads: “This is to inform all esteemed Parents/Guardians of Students of Osun State University that a meeting of Parents’ Forum has been scheduled to hold as follows. Date: Monday, 16th August 2021. Time: 3:00pm. Venue: Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium, Main Campus, Osogbo.”
University students are supposed to be adults that are responsible for their affairs while in school. Asking parents to participate in a meeting with the university authorities to discuss the welfare of their children appears strange. Also, parents don’t necessarily send their children and wards to universities closest to their homes. It could be hundreds of miles away. How does the university expect parents who are far away from their children’s school to attend the meeting?
Nigerian universities appear to be adopting the method of running primary and secondary schools. In July, the Bayelsa State-owned university, Niger Delta University (NDU), introduce school uniforms as a means of identifying the students.
The University says the uniforms would help “curb cultism and other crimes in the institution.
The announcement of the school uniform policy sparked protests by the students who feel they have been reduced to secondary school level where such is the norm.
