Osun speaker, Egbedun, said the action was taken in compliance with the judgement of a Federal High Court
Osun State will no longer use the state crest, flag and anthem created during the Administration of former governor, Rauf Aregbesola.
This is as the Osun State House of Assembly on Tuesday, July 11, repealed the Osun State Anthem, Crest and Flag Law 2012 during its plenary session.
Speaking on the development, the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, said the action was taken in compliance with the judgement of a Federal High Court of December 14, 2017.
Prior to the abolishment of the law, it was challenged by a state legislator, Kanmi Ajibola, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member of the House currently presenting Oriade Constituency in court.

According to the Speaker, “Understanding, however, that there may be some aspects of the law that are appropriate, the House agreed that all corrections made on Osun State Anthem, Crest and Flag Law 2012 form part of the Bill for Osun State Anthem, Crest and Flag Bill 2023, sponsored by the Majority Leader.
“In essence, what the House has done, is vacate a law that had already been invalidated by a Court of competent jurisdiction, to pave way for a new law that will respect the letters and spirit of the Nigerian constitution that swore to abide by.”
The Speaker on Friday had notified the House during the plenary of the decision to repeal the law.
The Assembly passed the law creating the anthem, flag and crest for the state under the Speakership of Naheem Salam.
The administration of Rauf Aregbesola had approached the then state assembly to create an anthem, flag and crest for the state.
Apart from this, the administration also changed the state’s name from “Osun State, the State of the Living Spring” to “State of Osun, the State of the Virtuous.”
