Ondo South by-election: Akinfolarin unveils promises inclusive representation

By Julius Alabi, Akure

Former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin, has formally signalled his intention to contest the by-election of the Ondo South Senatorial seat, promising to pursue inclusive legislation and sustainable development if elected

Akinfolarin said his decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders, youth groups and community leaders across the senatorial district.

Speaking at a meeting with supporters which include members of Ondo State Patriotic Movement for Democracy in Akure, he said Ondo South requires purposeful representation that will prioritise infrastructure renewal, coastal development and economic empowerment.

He explained that his legislative experience in the House of Representatives exposed him to the intricacies of lawmaking and federal budgeting, adding that he intends to leverage that experience to attract more federal projects to the district.

The senatorial hopeful said communities in the riverine areas have continued to face environmental and infrastructural challenges, particularly in road connectivity, erosion control and access to potable water.

According to him, a strategic partnership between the federal government and state actors would be critical to unlocking the economic potential of Ondo South, especially in fisheries, maritime trade and tourism.

Akinfolarin also pledged to promote youth-driven initiatives, noting that unemployment remains one of the most pressing concerns among young people in the district.

He stated that vocational training, entrepreneurship support and digital skill development would form a core part of his legislative agenda if given the mandate.

The aspirant emphasised that representation must go beyond motions and debates on the Senate floor, insisting that constant engagement with constituents is essential.

“I believe in accessible leadership. The people of Ondo South deserve a senator who will listen, consult and act in their best interest,” he said.

Akinfolarin maintained that unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be crucial in ensuring electoral victory.

He called on party members to close ranks and focus on strengthening grassroots mobilisation structures across wards and local governments.

The former lawmaker further promised to champion policies that would support small and medium-scale enterprises, especially among women traders and cooperative societies.

He noted that the Senate remains a critical platform for influencing national policies, budgetary allocations and oversight of federal agencies.

Akinfolarin also appealed for peaceful political engagement, urging supporters to avoid inflammatory rhetoric as the campaign season approaches.

He expressed confidence that his track record of constituency projects and sustained community outreach would speak in his favour during the primaries and general election.

Stakeholders at the meeting commended his early declaration, describing it as a demonstration of preparedness and commitment.

They urged party leaders to ensure a transparent primary process that would strengthen unity and build momentum ahead of the polls.
